The Squier Strat-O-Sonic has made a comeback from its early-2000’s origins as the Fender Stratosonic, bringing back a hybrid guitar with specifications suggesting Fender-meets-Gibson in design but with some interesting pickup wiring options.

This guitar is a well-made instrument and features a set of Fishman Fluence P90’s voiced by Greg Koch as part of his Gristle-Tone series with the aim of lifting its appeal beyond the supplied switching options.

This model has had the pickups changed from the original Fender-designed Alnico single-coil soap-bar pickups to a set of Fishman Fluence Greg Koch Gristle-ToneTM P90’s. This Fishman pickup set is designed to provide a noise-free P90 sound whether bridge and neck pickups are selected separately or together. When both pickups are selected, they are voiced to produce a complimentary and balanced sound.

The push-pull function on the Volume and Tone controls of the originals is retained but functionally is changed as follows:

• Voice 1 - with both Volume and Tone pushed (down) the vintage P90 sound as programmed into each pickup is selected • Voice 2 - with Tone pulled up and Volume pushed down, the signal is boosted to give a boosted P90 sound experience akin to the pickups being wired in “series” • Voice 3 - with Volume pulled up, the pickups become more like Fender Single Coils as might be delivered on a Strat or a Telecaster. The position of the Tone control (whether pushed or pulled) is bypassed in this mode.

The result is three distinctive sound settings for each pickup governed by the pickup selector position, producing 9 sound options. This improves the versatility of the guitar with the bonus of no “hum” as is typically experienced with single coils, especially P90’s at higher gain settings. A booklet detailing the voices for each pickup is included. The Fishman pickups are “active” and require a 9V battery which is accessible for changing through the rear access panel where the pots and wiring are located.
